The Virginia Renaissance Faire is holding auditions for new cast members!

When?

February 11, 2017 in the theater room at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library Headquarters, 1201 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401
February 25 at the Salem Church Library, 2607 Salem Church Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407

What time?

Auditions are 10-2, no appointment necessary

What do I need to bring?

Enthusiasm and a sense of fun and adventure.
However, if you play an instrument and you might want to be part of our minstrel troupe, who provide musical accompaniment to the village, please bring your instrument.

How do I prepare?

Prepare a short monologue, about a minute’s worth. It doesn’t need to be a theatrical piece — you can tell us a story or talk about your hobby. Memorization is not important to us. We’re going to ask you questions and see how well you play with others. Wear comfortable clothes you can move around in.

But I’ve never done this before!

That’s okay. While some of our cast members came in with theatrical experience, for many this was their first theatrical experience. We’re going to provide you with training in improvisation, dialect, character development and renaissance history/culture. You will need to pull together a costume, but we will give you help to make, borrow or buy what you need.

What if I already have a costume and character?

If you’ve got costume(s) already, please feel free to bring it (don’t wear it) and our costuming department will review it. While we’ll try out best to place you in the social cast you’d prefer, please try to keep an open mind — we’re populating a whole village and need a good variety of characters.

What if I have a friend/parent/significant other that isn’t sure they’re really up to the whole cast thing? Or what if I’m not sure I’m ready for cast but want to get involved?

We’re always looking for volunteer crew. Here are some of the openings: ground crew for the Joust (some horse experience required), stage managers (some theater experience preferred), safety/first aid (some medical, nursing, EMT experience preferred) site prep/maintenance, site construction, as well as workers for the ticket office, front gate and gift shop. Crew volunteers don’t have to come to auditions, they can just reach out to us at comeplay@varf.org or call 301-367-2958.

What if I have a stage act?

No need to come to auditions. Send us an e-mail at comeplay@varf.org and we’ll get you an entertainer application.

Are kids allowed to be on cast?

Yes, although if you’re under 18, you must have your parent or guardian’s permission. If you’re under 16, a parent or guardian must be onsite at all times while you’re rehearsing or performing. (Onsite could mean napping in their car in the parking lot or reading under a tree.) From time to time, we accept cast members under the age of 13. Typically, we require a parent or guardian to be on cast with them, so if your Mom, Dad or other adult relative wants to do this to, by all means, you both should audition.

What if I have more questions?

You can reach us by e-mail at comeplay@varf.org or phone at (703) 508-5036.

  1. So, what if I can be an assassin under the king or queens protection. Follow or can I request to be an assassin ambassador and there.

  2. Great questions! While our auditions are at those library locations (and you only need to attend one), the rehearsals and show happen at Lake Anna Winery, 5621 Courthouse Rd, Spotsylvania, VA.

Rehearsals are: April 1 (new cast only), and then each Saturday and Sunday in April, except for April 15-16, which is an off weekend, as well as May 6-7 for dress rehearsal. The show itself runs May 13-14 to June 10-11. While exceptions can be granted due to emergencies, you need to be able to commit to missing no more than two rehearsals and two show dates.
